LEARN. FOCUS
PERFORM. REPEAT
I began skiing as a very young man. At my first tournament, Mark Crone, Connie Caffie & Ken Meade were all in attendance. My dad and I barely knew the basics of how things worked.

Dad had surveyed in a course and we got size appropriate skis. I had a little monster slalom. Ken Meade was in the boat and when we took off I did every trick I knew. We got down a ways and they stopped the boat. Ken stood up and said that was really good son, now let's go back and do it again where the judge's are. As a little guy, I thought nothing of it and with his guidance I went back and did my whole run.

My total score that day was good enough for first place. My first ever real trophy. I ended up second in slalom. Ken asked me if I wanted to jump with a possibility of winning overall. My dad okayed the endeavor and as might be expected, the first jump was upside down followed by a few tears. Second was close but no cigars. On the last jump I rode it away and the (not so attractive trophy) for overall was mine.

To this day that was the most coveted trophy I've ever won. It finally disintegrated and went to the dead trophy graveyard but it still holds the same significance.

The joy of our sport to those that train is not known to most people. We spend our time in one of the most beautiful atmospheres on the planet. We expend our blood sweat and tears to make it go.We endure inclement weather and revel in our perfect days. At the end of the day, we hunt that elusive success that has an addictive quality and is really hard to measure and even harder to explain to those that don't do it.

Every day that I ski is a blessing and a joy but on those days when I ski really well, that little trophy is resurrected in my heart and mind. Almost every day, for a very long time now, I go to that playground and get the opportunity to both ski and coach others that share that passion that I discovered as a little boy. I honestly don't understand why the whole world doesn't catch on to what we do but I'm really glad that we have.
